Physical Education
Intent
At Kerr Mackie Primary School, we recognise the importance of Physical Education (PE) and the role it has to play in developing the whole child. The intent of our PE curriculum is to develop our pupils’ curiosity about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and what this looks like as well as giving the children the confidence they need to achieve their potential. We intend to deliver fun and engaging PE lessons that are enjoyable, challenging and accessible to all. Through our teaching of PE, we provide opportunities for pupils to develop values and transferable life skills such as teamwork, communication, respect, resilience and leadership. Our PE curriculum is bespoke and includes, wherever possible, providing opportunities to take part in a wide range of sports, competitions and enrichment activities, which some children may otherwise not experience.
Implementation
PE at Kerr Mackie Primary School provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including: invasion games, strike and field games, net and well games, gymnastics, dance, outdoor and adventurous activities and swimming. The PE long-term plan sets out the units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are met. All pupils participate in two high-quality PE lessons each week, covering two disciplines every half term. In addition, children are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extra-curricular activities both after-school and during lunch times.
Each year a group of Year 6 children are invited to become Community Coaches for the school. They develop into sporting role models for the younger children, assisting with break time and lunch time activities, our annual Sports Day and other sporting events. Every year, we hold a Health Week where all of our pupils learn about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and experience a wide range of sporting activities in order to develop their skills, improve their fitness and try something new. Children in Year 5 swim once a week for the entirety of the academic year.
Impact
We help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. From our lessons, our pupils learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, as well as learning to both win and lose with grace. Our pupils are given the necessary skills and a love of sport, ideally growing up to live happy and healthy lives, utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.
